Indiana drivers: Not many know about Indiana's attempt to reduce uninsured drivers. If you are pulled over by a policeman (for any reason), or you are involved in an accident (REGUARDLESS OF WHOS AT FAULT)....You will receive via mail within 2 weeks an audit from the license branch requesting a "Certificate of Compliance" to be completed by your Insurance agent. All Insurance agents are registe...red with the BMV & have access to their system to report electronically whether an person has insurance or not.
If the agent does not confirm electronically within 10 days of receiving such a letter, the individual involved will be suspended for 90 days mandatory & fined $250 dollars for 1st offense ( $500 for 2nd offense & $1000 for 3rd).
Below are copies of what the audit letter looks like--

What if I just received a notice from the BMV about an accident in 2011, when I was driving my girlfriends car? They want me to show proof of insurance for that time. Well, I have no idea who her insurance company was as I havent seen her in five years. What can I do to keep my license from being suspended?

Scott, The only way to avoid being suspended & not paying the reinstatement fee is to contact the ex GF and ask what company she was insured with at that time period. HER company will do the Certificate of compliance for you since they insured the car in question (if her policy was active at the time). This is why you always want to end relationships on a positive note! License branch has no sense of humor when it comes to these matters and they will make no exceptions. If you want to be technical about it, its a legal matter that she complies with your request and you suffer pretty severe consequenses if she doesnt cooperate.
